I have been fortunate enough to secure an acting position as an APS6 within my current work section very quickly following finishing the graduate program. I believe it took initiative and hard work to display my skills and reliability to my manager. I also believe using the ILS and WLS to act well above my substantive position was crucial in my promotion.

After graduating from the grad program, you need to be proactive and be the one to push for a promotion. Use the ILS standards to argue for why your skills are at a higher level. Try and find a supervisor who will support your growth and extending yourself if this is what you want. Also make sure not to miss the bulk APS 5 round at the end of the grad program.
