Position description

Travellers Aid’s EmpowerMEnt peer mentor program focuses on encouraging National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) participants to reach their goals and effectively engage in the community.   

The program participants will range from diverse backgrounds and have varying disabilities (Autism and Intellectual Disabilities); however, they will not have complex medical needs or display behaviors of concern.

  • Peer Mentors will be matched to participants based on their shared interests, age, skills, and knowledge and will partake in the participant's activities of choice. 
    (i.e., playing sports, going to the movies, learning new life and independence skills such as travel training or money handling)   
  • The Peer Mentor’s objective is to be a positive role model who can help participant with community interaction, build the participant’s skills and confidence, and encourage them to make positive choices now and in the future.  
  • The role has flexible working hours, and you will work with your participant to arrange the day and time of the sessions.  
  • The Peer Mentor will also monitor the participant's progress and report back to the Service Innovation Manager to ensure successful outcomes are being delivered and possible challenges discussed.  
  • Session times are to be a minimum of 3 hours. 
  • Peer Mentors are not required to provide personal care and/or administer medication.  

About you

Essential

  • Successful completion of the online NDIS Worker Orientation Module.  
  • Demonstrated experience working with people from diverse backgrounds.  
  • An ability to communicate with various levels of staff and a wide range of diverse backgrounds.   
  • Able to perform under pressure and in challenging circumstances as they arise.   
  • A desire to assist participants to develop and achieve personal growth through their NDIS goals.  
  • An insightful nature that enables the awareness of challenges the participant may be experiencing.  
  • Highly demonstrated problem-solving skills.  
  • The ability to work autonomously and in a team environment.  
  • Planning and coordination of activities including travel arrangements.  
  • The flexibility to adapt to changing environments and situations.  

Pre-Employment Checks to be undertaken prior to commencement of role: 

  • All staff must obtain an NDIS Worker Screening Check prior to commencement 
  • Police check & International Police check (if applicable)
  • Working with Children Check – if applicable  
  • VISA entitlement to work in Australia
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

Desirable

  • Students currently engaged in subjects such as disability/ allied health services  
  • Experience supporting people living with disabilities  
  • Current First Aid Certificate – HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid and CPR.
