We are provided with various technical and non-technical trainings which I find extremely useful. At workplace, however, learning is through working. Sometimes, we may have to work on things with no information/prior knowledge but it does help develop our skills to gain confidence.

The graduate program at Western Power offers various entry-level training sessions, including presentation skills, time management, and writing reports and business cases. These programs are very helpful for graduates. In terms of on-the-job training, I have worked on two different projects where I gained various technical skills, such as SQL, Python, Qlik Sense and various tools and frameworks, which I applied in my work. Additionally, I have enhanced my communication and presentation skills through collaboration with team members, which are essential in our projects.

At Western Power, training and development programs are designed to support both professional growth and skill enhancement. The company offers a range of formal training opportunities, including workshops and seminars tailored to specific roles and industry needs. These programs are designed to keep employees updated on the latest practices and technologies in the energy sector. In addition to formal training, there is substantial emphasis on informal and on-the-job training. Employees often gain valuable experience through hands-on projects, mentoring from more experienced colleagues, and participation in cross-functional teams. This practical exposure helps in developing problem-solving abilities, technical expertise, and project management skills.

For actual personal development - everything learnt, is by doing myself, and connecting what the team does together, corporate training videos isn't the same - being a machine optimised to answer quizzes and multi choice questions isn't the same as applying skills to work, downside of school/university mindset

Lots of onboarding training, mentor program is available if you want it, first aid and white card are paid for (at least for engineers requiring site access). Specific team training has been limited so far.

I appreciate that the graduate program does formal soft skill training. Some of the sessions have been useful and information. On the job training varies per area, but so far the training has been done well, but I feel to get the best training, you need to put yourself out there and ask heaps of questions.

The training has been great. The graduate cohort have been sent on some key skills training which have aided our professional development. My team leader was also kind enough to send me on an excel training where I gained some great knowledge regarding complex excel formulas.

There is a training accreditation system called Fetch which contains many different formal training modules that are required to complete based on your typical role. There are also many other training courses and workshops that are provided while you are on the graduate program that aim to improve your soft professional skills.

Formal training is decent, with options to attend site visits. Informal training could be better for example LinkedIn learning etc.

Training and development is mostly incorporated in a robust program that sees graduates rotate between areas in the company. Additional training is done through third-party engineering organisations.

Mentor program - to discuss challenges at work and how to solve them etc I'd like to see more structure around the Grad program - i.e This is what you're expected to learn about in this area. Formal training opportunies - I.E Formal certifictions.
